How After Asr publishes with trust.

After Asr is a Muslim-forward publication committed to truthfulness, clarity, and dignity. We aim to build trust by explaining our standards openly: how we verify information, how we label opinion, how we handle corrections, and how we protect editorial independence.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to publish work that serves the public with honesty and clarity, especially on topics that affect Muslims and broader society. We aim to be values-driven without being reaction-driven.

  • Truthfulness: we verify what we can, disclose what we cannot, and correct errors plainly.
  • Dignity: we avoid dehumanizing language and sensationalism.
  • Fairness: we represent people and viewpoints accurately, even when we disagree.
  • Independence: money and pressure do not decide our conclusions.
  • Accountability: we welcome good-faith critique and make corrections transparently.
What we avoid: outrage bait, identity click-farming, rumor laundering, and content designed to “own” someone rather than inform readers.
02

Types of Content

We publish different categories of work. We label them so readers can understand what they are reading.

News / Reporting Fact-focused coverage based on verification, documents, and reliable sources. Neutral tone where possible.
Explainers Context-driven guides meant to clarify complex topics, with sources and definitions.
Analysis Interpretation of events using evidence and reasoning. Clearly separated from straight reporting.
Opinion Arguments or perspectives. We still require accuracy for factual claims.
Personal Essay Lived experience and reflection. We protect dignity and do not treat personal stories as universal proof.
Important: Opinion is not a license to invent facts. Any factual claim can be challenged and must be supportable.
03

Accuracy & Verification Standards

We aim to verify information before publishing. Verification can include documents, primary sources, direct observation, interviews, and cross-checking with credible outlets and official records.

  • We prioritize primary sources, such as official statements, documents, and original research, whenever possible.
  • We seek multiple confirmations for serious allegations or claims that could harm reputations.
  • We distinguish between what is known, what is alleged, and what is uncertain.
  • We do not knowingly publish misinformation. If we learn we made an error, we correct it.
Our standard: publish what we can defend with evidence, not what “everyone is saying.”
04

Sourcing & Attribution

We cite and attribute information so readers can evaluate credibility. When sources are unclear, readers cannot verify, and trust drops.

  • We link to sources when practical and safe.
  • We identify quotes and data clearly.
  • We avoid misleading headlines or framing that contradicts the article content.
  • We do not use anonymous sources casually. See our policy on sensitive sources below.
Corrections apply to sources too: if we cite something incorrectly, we fix the record and note the change.
05

Corrections, Updates & Clarifications

When we make a mistake, we correct it. When we learn new information, we update responsibly. When something is misunderstood, we clarify without defensiveness.

  • Corrections address factual errors, such as names, dates, quotes, numbers, or statements of fact.
  • Clarifications address confusing phrasing or context issues without changing the core facts.
  • Updates add new verified information and are marked so readers can see what changed.

Our detailed process is in the Corrections Policy.

06

Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are made for editorial reasons: truth, relevance, and public value. Advertising, sponsors, donors, partners, and outside pressure do not decide what we publish or how we conclude.

  • We label sponsored content clearly if it exists.
  • We do not sell “pay to praise” coverage.
  • We do not promise positive editorial outcomes in exchange for payment or access.

See our Advertising Policy for boundaries around advertising and sponsorships.

07

Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest exists when personal, financial, or relational factors could reasonably affect impartial judgment or create the appearance of bias.

  • We avoid covering topics where we have a direct financial stake without disclosure.
  • We disclose relevant relationships when they are significant to reader trust.
  • We may reassign or decline coverage when a conflict is too strong to manage responsibly.
Reality check: everyone has a perspective. Our job is to be honest about it and disciplined in how we report.
08

Anonymous & Sensitive Sources

We may grant anonymity when a source faces credible risk of retaliation, job loss, harassment, or harm for speaking. However, anonymity is an exception, not a default.

  • We require a strong reason for anonymity and try to verify the source’s claims independently.
  • We describe the source’s role, without exposing them, so readers can judge credibility.
  • We do not grant anonymity to launder rumors, personal grudges, or unverifiable allegations.
Protection has limits: We may be legally compelled to disclose information in certain cases. If a situation is high-risk, we may recommend safer channels before accepting sensitive details.
09

Dignity, Harm Minimization & Safety

We aim to report truthfully without turning people into targets. That means we think about downstream harm.

  • We avoid doxxing and do not publish private personal details without a compelling public-interest reason.
  • We use careful language when discussing violence, tragedy, or vulnerable communities.
  • We avoid amplifying extremist propaganda or hateful content, even when reporting on it.
  • We distinguish criticism of ideas, policies, or institutions from harassment of individuals.
Principle: be honest, be accurate, and do not be careless with people’s lives.
10

Use of AI Tools

We may use AI tools to support parts of our workflow, such as brainstorming, editing suggestions, formatting, or summarizing notes. However:

  • We do not treat AI output as a primary source.
  • We verify factual claims using credible sources before publication.
  • We aim to keep a human editorial review step for published work.
  • If AI meaningfully affects content beyond minor editing, we may disclose that in an author or editor note where appropriate.
No hallucinations policy: if we cannot verify it, we do not publish it as fact.
11

Reader Tips & Submissions

Readers may share tips, story ideas, or submissions. We appreciate it, and we take care with what you send.

  • We may verify submissions and may not respond to every message.
  • Do not send highly sensitive personal data unless requested.
  • Submitting a tip does not guarantee publication.

If you are submitting content for publication, we may edit for clarity, length, accuracy, and standards alignment.

Comments & Community Spaces

If the site hosts comments or community spaces, those areas are moderated according to our Community Guidelines. We reserve the right to remove content or restrict participation to protect the health of the community.
